That’s what friends are for
Twins Alanna and Alea Bullock began their KIPP journey as fourth graders at KIPP Gaston Primary. Alanna reflects on her “fantastic” experience. “Maintaining and establishing relationships requires perseverance and honesty”, she said.
The twins matriculated through Gaston Middle and GCP Price High, graduating in June with the Pride of 2024.
When reflecting on their journey, the twins think back to the final summer they spent with their close friends, making memories before they all parted ways. “We had to cherish every moment”.
Raking in millions with the Pride
Pride High scholars are supported by the college and career counseling team, which includes Denise Cherry, who the twins credit for directing them to apply for scholarships that would help them fulfill their dream of pursuing college degrees. Alea and Alanna were awarded the Thrive scholarship—intended to provide high-achieving, diverse, and underrepresented students, including students of color from under-resourced communities, the opportunities they need to thrive at top colleges and in meaningful careers—and the Douglas and Stefanie Kahn Scholarship, a merit award established by KIPP North Carolina Board Chair Doug Kahn and wife Stefanie.
For Alanna, receiving these scholarships was particularly rewarding. “I’m thrilled that…years of hard work have paid off, and that my commitment and academic success demonstrate that I am receiving what I have earned.”
The Bullock sisters’ scholarships were among the nearly $3.5 million that was awarded to the Pride of 2024.
The impact of philanthropy
The Kahn and Thrive scholarships have had a profound impact on the Bullock twins, both financially and personally. Thanks to the awards, they began their college journey at NC A&T State University without financial concerns, allowing them to focus fully on their education.
As Thrive Scholars, both sisters remain motivated to excel in their academic journeys. Alanna explained, “It reminds me that anything is possible as long as I work hard and stay dedicated.” This mindset continues to drive them as they pursue their goals and career aspirations.
Looking forward and giving back
Both Alanna and Alea are studying Child Development and Family Studies, a field they chose in response to their common passion for working with children. They hope to one day open an affordable daycare center together.
In the coming years, the twins envision themselves giving back to their family, with plans to buy their mother a house and secure her future, and to the community through tutoring and donations.
“Be a leader, not a follower…”
For current KIPP students aspiring to follow in their footsteps, Alanna offers this advice: “Stay focused, get good grades, be dedicated, and build connections. Be a leader, not a follower, and don’t be easily influenced.”
Both Alanna and Alea see themselves mentoring future students and giving back to the KIPP community in any way they can.
As they continue their college journey, the Bullock twins stand as examples of what dedication, hard work, and holistic support can achieve. Their story is not just one of personal success, but a testament to the power of education and community in shaping limitless futures.
