Founded in 2022, KIPP Durham Elementary School is a free, non-profit, high-performing, college-preparatory public charter school providing an academically rigorous and joyous school experience to K-3 Grade students in Durham. The school will grow a grade a year to eventually serve students in K-5 Grade in 2026.
At KIPP Durham Elementary, we commit to developing the whole child through culturally responsive teaching that cultivates confidence and a positive self-identity. We believe that self-efficacy leads to creativity, risk-taking, and critical thinking. Students believe they can grow their character and intellect. These skills will provide our students the opportunity to make a profound impact in their community and the world at large.
What makes KIPP Durham Elementary special:
Kendal Grier has been tapped as the Founding Principal of KIPP Durham Elementary School opening in August 2022 serving kindergarten and 1st-grade students. With more than 15 years of kindergarten through 8th-grade experience, the core of her approach as a teacher and leader has always been the commitment ‘to doing right by every child, no matter what.” Throughout her career, Kendal has taught and led in public schools, including 5 years as teacher-leader at KIPP Reach College Prep, and 5 years as Primary Dean for Uplift Education Charter Schools in Texas. In 2020, Kendal was honored to return to her home state of Oklahoma serving as the KIPP School Leader in Oklahoma City. Kendal earned her Bachelor of Science in African and African American Studies from the University of Oklahoma and a Master’s Degree of Education in Urban School Leadership from Southern Methodist University.
At KIPP Durham Elementary, we commit to developing the whole child through culturally responsive teaching that cultivates confidence and a positive self-identity.
We believe that self-efficacy leads to creativity, risk taking, and critical thinking. Students will believe they can grow their character and intellect. These skills will provide our students the opportunity to make a profound impact in their community and world at large.
We strive to cultivate the necessary knowledge, skills, and strategies in our students that will help shape them to be resilient, determined, visionary, and influential enough to change others and ultimately the world.
We believe in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Intelligence plus character–that is the goal of true education. The complete education gives one not only power of concentration, but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate.” We help instill in our students the confidence, knowledge, and skills needed to be successful in college, career, and life, and we will help develop in our students character and belief that it is their responsibility to make their community and world a better place.
