One KIPP

ONE KIPP is a strategic shift fostering teamwork across all KIPP schools. By using a shared playbook with clear goals, it encourages smarter, more cohesive work to drive student success.

One KIPP is a Strategic Shift

One KIPP will bring unrelenting focus to K-12 academic excellence and alignment, ensuring what happens in every KIPP classroom is grounded in research and backed by evidence.

To produce consistent results for every student, in every school, every day, all KIPP schools and regions will adopt and implement shared assessments, curricula, and standardized practices in K-8 Literacy, K-8 Math, High Schools, Match, and Leadership Development. Research shows highly aligned organizations are more successful. In its recent analysis, CREDO found that students experience accelerated learning at KIPP, as if they attended school for additional days—but, students in more aligned charter networks are making more academic growth than KIPPsters. KIPP’s own data shows that our aligned regions, with systems and supports for academics, are the ones with the strongest results over time. Where we have pursued an aligned approach–in early literacy and with Match counseling – outcomes improved.

One KIPP About Working Smarter, Together

During our 30-year history, KIPP has had a lasting impact for students:

According to a recent Mathematica study, the impact of attending KIPP, if extrapolated nationwide, would be large enough to close the college completion gap between White and Black/Latinx students. While we celebrate these accomplishments, we knew pre-pandemic there was an even higher performance level our students deserved, and the school years affected by COVID had significant, negative impacts.

Variable practice leads to variable results:
KIPP was built on the idea of “power to lead,” affording school leaders and teachers autonomy and freedom to innovate. This decentralized model spurred groundbreaking innovation and experimentation as ideas arose and were spread organically across and beyond KIPP. With increasing scale, however, this approach began to show its limitations. Variability in practice and lack of alignment produced variable results within and across the KIPP network.

Alignment and scale lead to excellence:
Our regions with the greatest scale and aligned academic systems consistently perform at the highest levels and are moving faster in returning to pre-pandemic performance levels. When compared to a national sample, KIPP students in regions in their second year implementing our aligned early literacy approach reversed or narrowed the performance gap.

Uniting KIPP around a core operating model:
Going forward, we will work together, smarter, aligning around a core operating model delivered in every KIPP school.

EARLY RESULTS: LITERACY
KIPP Kindergarten students began the year 9 percentage points behind the national average; by end of year, KIPP student growth was 6 percentage points above the national average – a change of 15.

One KIPP is a Shared Playbook with Clear Goals

ALL KIPP REGIONS WILL:

  • Train teachers to deliver K-2nd grade early literacy instruction grounded in the science of reading, using carefully researched curricula, assessments, and other class materials.
  • Launch an aligned K-8 literacy program focused on rigorous reading, rich writing, and vocabulary development.
  • Adopt a nationally shared approach to K-8 math instruction, including common math assessments, high-quality math curricula, and training for teachers and coaches.
  • Implement common practices in high schools around school culture, instructional rigor, academic health, and assessments.
  • Double down on Match counseling, ensuring students have the support to evaluate their futures after graduation.
  • Increase the number of school leaders thriving across the KIPP network by providing role clarity for principals, defining a bar of excellence for performance, and providing newly designed and targeted professional development to school leaders.

KIPP FOUNDATION WILL:

Support regions in operationalizing One KIPP by: selecting common assessments and curricula; building content and tools; aligning performance management and training for leaders; establishing systems and collecting data to monitor execution.
